Student Spotlight: Emily and Shipon receives the Educational Material Award at national level

Emily is a second-year Master’s student working in Dr. Macarena Farcuh’s lab. Her research focuses on the effects of plant growth regulators on various apple cultivars to support growers in the mid-Atlantic region. In 2023, she was a finalist in the Cornerstone event and co-received the Outstanding Education Materials Award from the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). Emily has gained valuable experience through extension outreach and research and is eager to apply her knowledge beyond the university setting.

Shipon, a PhD student in the Farcuh Lab, is focused on preharvest and postharvest management strategies to improve the quality and shelf life of fruits, particularly ‘Honeycrisp’ apples. A recipient of the prestigious National Science and Technology (NST) Fellowship, Shipon is committed to advancing his research and academic development. Outside of his academic pursuits, he enjoys socializing, exploring new places, watching movies, playing card games, and studying fresh produce at local markets.

Both Emily and Shipon are grateful to PSLA for supporting their journeys and are excited about their contributions to the future of horticultural science.
