Anmol Kajla
I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Plant Science at the University of Maryland. My research focuses on understanding the genetics behind important wheat traits such as spike architecture, plantheight, and disease resistance. I use a combination of molecular biology, genomics, and field experiments to identify and validate the genes responsible for these traits. Working alongside breeders, molecular biologists, and computational scientists, I contribute to developing wheat varieties that are more productive and disease-resistant.
I feel fortunate to have been mentored by Dr. Vijay Tiwari, whose guidance, support, and encouragement has played a huge role in shaping who I am as a researcher. Under his mentorship, I have been honored to receive several awards, including the Outstanding Graduate Research Assistant Award and first place in the university-wide 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, among others.
Beyond research, I have found great joy in being part of the Plant Science and Landscape Architecture Graduate Student Association (PSLA-GSA). Serving as Social Chair and as Chair, I have had the privilege of organizing academic events, building community, and working to improve the graduate student experience in our department. I am grateful to the department for giving me the space and support to take on these roles and make a positive difference beyond the
lab.
