Area of Specialization:
- Dr. Walsh has worked in the production and handling of fruit crops for more than three decades. In the field, his research focuses on their production and postharvest physiology. His laboratory team uses molecular techniques to study the effects of typical production inputs on the epiphytic bacteria present on the surface of fresh fruits. The goal of this research is to identify and test metrics for use in food safety assurance programs.
- He has served as his department's Undergraduate Coordinator for the past 15 years. In that time he worked with his colleagues to develop curricula that appeal to students from traditional agricultural backgrounds and from urban and suburban areas. He also teaches courses in Horticulture and advises students majoring in Plant Science and in Horticulture and Crop Production.
- Dr. Walsh also coordinates the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (JIFSAN) international training courses in Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). In that role he has organized more than 15 Train-the-Trainers programs. He also trains and assists local fruit and vegetable growers in the mid-Atlantic Region in developing GAPs programs.
