Area of Specialization:

Shenglin E. Chang received her Ph.D. at UC Berkeley in 2000. She is currently an Associate Professor at University of Maryland's Landscape Architecture Program in the Department of Plant Science and Landscape Architecture. Born in Taiwan, she has developed and implemented innovative approaches to public involvement in environmental issues through civic arts, community design participation, and social-political activism. She received the 2004 CELA Award of Recognition for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service in Landscape Architecture (CELA - Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture).

Dr. Chang's book, The Global Silicon Valley Home: Lives and Landscapes within Taiwanese American Trans-Pacific Culture, has recently been published by the Stanford University Press (2006). Her scholarship focuses on the transformations of Asian and Latino immigrants' lifestyles and identities in the Silicon Valley and the suburban DC-Maryland-Virginia region. Her recent essays include: "Seeing Landscape through Cross-cultural Eyes" in Landscape Journal 24-2: 05; "Home here, Home There" in Landscape Review 9(1); and, "Breaking Silicon Silence" in Challenging the Chip (Temple 2006). She has edited and co-authored two books (translated into Chinese) with Randy Hester: Living Landscape (1998) and A Theory for Building Community (1998).

Shenglin's teaching focuses on issues related to landscape and identity across world cultures. With the support from the Freeman Foundation, she established modules and courses in partnership with faculty and students in East Asia, including Taiwan, China, and Japan. She was a visiting scholar at UC Berkeley in fall 2006, and a visiting professor in the Graduate Institute of Building and Planning at National Taiwan University in spring 2008. Meanwhile, she taught the Sustainable Future Program in Montverde, Costa Rica, in summer 2008. The Department of Landscape Architecture in the Chung Yuan Christian University in Taiwan invites her as an adjutant professor to develop the international landscape architecture education program in fall 2008. In summer 2009, she will collaborate with faculty in the Institute of Natural and Environmental Science in the University of Hyogo in Japan to teach and research on issues related to new ruralism and eco-village.
