Celebration of our inaugural year as an
Arboretum and Botanical Garden
and a Tree Campus USA
The exciting outdoor event took place on Friday May 8 2009, coinciding with National Public Gardens Day. It featured a welcome from President Mote; an overview of the Arboretum and Botanical Garden (ABG) by Marla McIntosh (ABG Director); and guest speakers and honored AGNR alumni- Scott Aker (Gardens Unit Leader, US National Arboretum), Holly Shimizu (Executive Director, US Botanic Garden), and Sara Tangren (President, Chesapeake Natives).
An "alumni elm" was planted in honor of Scott Aker, Holly Shimizu and Sara Tangren for their outstanding public service and accomplishments related to public gardens and plant conservation. The final highlight "Tree Walkin'" was performed by our talented student Matt Kepler. Matt wrote it in Fall 2008 for extra credit in PLSC 171. Click here to hear Tree Walkin'

Arboretum and Botanical Garden
In 2008, the University of Maryland campus became an arboretum and botanical garden, affirming the university's commitment to a green campus. Our trees and plants enhance the quality of campus life. At the same time, the campus provides a resource that is central to the educational, research and service missions of a great land grant university.
Tree Campus USA
The Arbor Day Foundation has named the University of Maryland a Tree Campus USA university for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship, making it the first university in the state to receive this honor.
